Louis van Gaal, coach of the Dutch national football team, confirmed that his team did not need to play to entertain fans, after the team beat their Latvian hosts 1-0 on Friday night in qualifying for the 2022 World Cup.
Davi Claassen scored the game-winning goal for the Netherlands in the 19th minute, to bring the team’s total to 16 points at the top of Group G.
The Latvian team nearly equalized in the dying seconds of the game, but goalkeeper Justin Bello saved the team and saved the ball.
Claassen scored the goal, using the Memphis Depay corner kick, and the Dutch team’s possession rate was 75%, and it was the best on the attacking side.
Van Gaal declined to talk about the team’s ability to entertain fans, stressing that World Cup qualification is the only goal, after failing to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.
“We don’t have to entertain the fans here,” Van Gaal told NOS after the game. We have to qualify for the World Cup, that’s the goal, these are very difficult matches. Every long shot was a threat from their striker Roberts Oldricks.
The Dutch team are two points ahead of their Norwegian counterpart, who drew 1-1 with Turkey on Friday.
